About the Residency

Established originally in 2004, our residency program has quickly grown to support the needs of the Emergency Department at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, NJ.  With over 160,000 annual ED visits, St. Joseph’s has not only become the busiest ED in the state of New Jersey, but also one of the largest in the country.  As a designated stroke center, 24-hour interventional cardiac catheterization center and a level II trauma center, our 90 bed ED is equipped with all the necessary tools and resources for both patient care and resident education.

Despite the large volume of patients seen in the ED, the focus for our residents is to create an exceptional learning environment both clinically and academically.  In the ED, our residents work one on one with an attending and are exposed to critical patients and procedures, even as an intern, which includes a significant amount of blunt and penetrating trauma.  Academically, there is a strong focus on didactics and our monthly grand rounds often features nationally recognized speakers.  In addition, we work to maintain a strong presence at several EM conferences on the national and local level, with residents presenting cases, posters, and original research.

We are accredited by the ACGME as a three year emergency medicine residency and are affiliated with New York Medical College.  We recently transitioned from a four year program to a three year program. Currently, we accept 6 residents per year (24 residents total), however, as we have transitioned to a three year program the number of residents accepted per year may increase.  As our department continues to grow, the residency strives to do the same and we are excited for what the future holds.  We look forward to sharing our program with you as we move forward together in our careers in emergency medicine.
