Mission

By the end of training, the Medical Education Fellow will be able to:
- Develop a foundational skillset for a career in medical education including but not limited to the following:
- Undergraduate medical education (UME)
- Graduate medical education (GME)

- Feedback, assessment, remediation, and evaluation methods

- Comprehend core educational theories and their application to emergency medicine education
- Apply evidence-based strategies and methodologies to effectively teach in clinical and non-clinical settings

- Demonstrate cultural competence with learners and colleagues
- Function as a reflective physician with a growth mindset
- Be a change agent for their department and specialty of emergency medicine
Clinical Expectations
- Development of an area of clinical expertise
- Obtain ABEM/ABOEM Board Certification
- Be a clinical role model for learners to look up to by practicing compassionate, culturally competent, and evidence-based medicine
- Provide real-time feedback to learners during clinical shifts
- Provide substantial feedback to the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC)
- Solicit and reflect upon clinical feedback from learners, colleagues, and administration
Didactic Teaching
- Work closely with APD to develop Core Conference curricula using innovative and evidence-based strategies
- Deliver one Grand Rounds lecture per year
- Apply to give a presentation at a regional and/or national level
- Contribute to medical student education (lectures, simulation, etc.)
Administration
- The second-year fellow will act as one or a combination of the following positions:
- Assistant Residency Director
- Assistant Clerkship Director
- Assistant Simulation Director
- Work with Residency and Departmental leadership to develop and implement a quality improvement project that overlaps with medical education
Scholarship
- Learn how to effectively critically appraise literature
- Produce at minimum one piece of scholarly work to be published and/or disseminated on a large scale
Innovation
- Thinking outside of the box and piloting ideas without the fear of failure!
Logistics
- Salary/benefits
- Base Salary: $100,000 per year
- The fellow will be an employee of ApolloMD and therefore will receive full benefits (~$20,000 per year)
- CME Fund: $5,000 per year (CME to be approved by Fellowship Director)
- Johns Hopkins University Masters of Education Degree in the Health Professions (MEHP) to be fully funded by ApolloMD (~$30,000 per year)
- Total package = $155,000 per year
- Clinical requirements
- Work 84 hours per month in the Emergency Department x 12 months = 1008 hours/year
- Additional hours can be worked upon approval at current physician hourly rate
- A majority of clinical shifts will be with learners (i.e., residents and medical students)
- Non-clinical requirements
- The fellow will be an integral part of the residency administrative team and its functions
- Four hours per week to meet with their faculty mentor (will vary week to week based on topic)
- Masters Degree Requirements
- MEHP Degree to be obtained from Johns Hopkins University during the two years of fellowship
- All required assignments to be completed on time
- Successful completion of Capstone Project

Fellowship Director Bio
Dr. Steinberg is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency, and Director of the Medical Education Fellowship at St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson, NJ. He completed residency training at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in NY, NY and completed a Master of Education in Health Professions (MEHP) at Johns Hopkins University. He has won several teaching/educational awards on the local and national level. He develops educational content for Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (Associate Editor “Basics of Emergency Medicine” and “Basics of Emergency Medicine: Pediatrics” Guides), Foundations of Emergency Medicine (Director of “Case-Based Imaging” Curriculum, Curriculum Development Expert), MDCalc (Medical Director of Content), to name a few. His passions include innovative curricular design, mentorship, emergency radiology, and teaching at the point of care. He enjoys hiking with his family, Yankees/Giants/Rangers, chicken wings, and bourbon.

During the first year, the fellow will establish and apply a core foundation of medical education principles including but not limited to curricular design, feedback, educational research, bedside teaching, lecture design, and learning theories. During the second year, the fellow will fine-tune their MedEd skillset based on their career goals; so, whether you are interested in residency leadership, UME, GME, simulation, online content development… you name it, we have the resources to get you there! Current Fellow Bio
Dr. Ilic is the incoming Medical Education Fellow at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. She completed medical school at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine before training in emergency medicine at St. Joseph’s, where she served as academic Chief Resident and developed a passion for medical education. Excited to stay on for fellowship, Dr. Ilic looks forward to further honing her teaching skills in St. Joseph’s high-acuity, high-volume environment. With a diverse faculty offering expertise across various niches, she is eager to continue learning and growing as an educator. Dr. Ilic has interests in curriculum design, infographics, and gamification to enhance medical education. Outside of medicine, Dr. Ilic enjoys playing basketball, attending music festivals, and spending time with family.
